The weather was clear and fine on Saturday, April 5th, the first day of the 2014 archaeological dig at the Cowell Lime Works Historic District. The day began at 9:00 AM reviewing the catalog system for the artifacts to be found at the site, the former location of the largest producer of lime in California.
The team of fourteen UCSC students and teaching assistants, along with Project Director Pat Paramoure, then headed to the hillside to clear brush and prepare the site for excavation work to come. The archaeological excavation at the Cowell Lime Works Historic District is in full swing and news continues to come in from the site. UCSC student Victoria Sweeney describes a long day of excavating down to a depth of 6", uncovering a few small artifacts and variations in the soil.
