When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, a memorial was held for him in Golden Gate Park. Fans were asked to bring a memento - something that celebrated his memory. This collection was donated to UC Santa Cruz by Theresa Garcia, one of Jerry Garcia’s daughters, as part of the broader Grateful Dead Archive. It consists of hundreds of objects – from guitars to poems to art works – that fans brought to the Jerry Garcia Memorial held in Golden Gate Park on August 13, 1995.
This collection poses extraordinary challenges for archival processing, and funds will help us preserve this remarkable collection that documents the core of the band-fan bond that was the heart of the Grateful Dead phenomenon.
Processing of this collection began in July 2013. Our $5,000 goal will help us process and preserve the collection and will help us support day-to-day operations of the Grateful Dead Archive.
Thank you! Your support ensures the Grateful Dead's music and legacy lives on and is enjoyed for generations to come!
