The UC Santa Cruz Sociology Department Sociology of Race, Class and Gender Award
Raising money to support our students and their continued work in challenging dominant norms and structures.
The Sociology of Race, Class, and Gender Endowment was established in 2000 by Pamela Ann Roby, who is currently a UCSC Professor Emerita of Sociology. The endowment funds two annual awards in the Sociology Department. Both are based on academic merit alone.
The first award is the Sociology of Race, Class, and Gender Senior Thesis Award. To be eligible for this award, applicants must be UCSC undergraduate sociology majors who have written their senior thesis on race, class, and gender during the academic year. The second award, the Sociology of Race, Class, and Gender Graduate Award, named in honor of Professor Roby’s parents, recognizes UC Santa Cruz Sociology Ph.D. candidates who have completed a Ph.D. dissertation, a Ph.D. dissertation prospectus, or a Ph.D. dissertation prospectus plus one or more chapters on race, class, and gender within the United States of America.
Their research may involve one or more additional nations and be on subjects such as but not limited to health, education, language, environment, work, culture, the economy, etc. in relation to race, class, and gender. The dissertation materials must contribute to social science and public understanding of race, class, and gender within the U.S., and race, class, and gender must be their simultaneous and central foci.
“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”
― Ida B. Wells (1862-1931)
