The UC Santa Cruz Retirees Association (aka "Silver Slugs") does some wonderful things for the UC Santa Cruz community. In addition to advocating and monitoring UC Santa Cruz’s benefits for retirees and helping “Silver Slugs” stay in touch with one another through regular events, the UC Santa Cruz Retirees Association has for many years provided scholarships to UC Santa Cruz students who are U.S. military veterans. This year, the association board decided to create another long-deserved scholarship for staff. Dubbed the "Silver Slug Award,” this new scholarship will be awarded to current and retired staff and their dependents studying at UC Santa Cruz who need financial assistance. We are excited and proud to be developing what may be the only campus program created by staff for staff. The sooner the award endowment is funded (a minimum of $25,000 is needed), the sooner we can begin helping staff and their families pursue their educational dreams. In addition to an initial gift of $5,000, several pledges have been made already to match dollar-for-dollar up to $6,500 in Giving Day donations. So a $10 gift today is worth $20, $25 is worth $50, $50 is worth $100, etc. With strong support from UC Santa Cruz community members of even $10 or $20 today, there’s a very good chance the first Silver Slug Award scholarship will be given to a deserving student next year. Because it’s an endowment, your donation today will keep on giving, and the amount and number of Silver Slug Award scholarships will only continue to increase.
Generous donors Mary Wells, Dave Kirk, and Sharon Dirnberger have provided a 1:1 match up to $6,500 for gifts made on Giving Day!
